Butternut Pasta Sauce with Sausage

Butternut Squash, Tomato & Red Pepper Pasta Sauce- Meatless Mondays by Rachel Deol

Written by: kpuryear

I’ve previously declared my love for squash, due to it’s low-calorie/ high nutrient qualities, but I should also mention that its flexibility makes it a true gem in any chef’s kitchen. The creamy quality lends itself beautifully to many varieties of pasta sauces (stay tuned on Mondays for an upcoming “Mac & Cheese” featuring butternut that is divine!). This sauce is an excellent addition to your kitchen repertoire because it’s a twist on a classic and it’s rich while remaining… Read More

Toddler Tips: Safety and Discipline by Kelli Smith

Written by: kpuryear

I never thought I would be thinking about discipline when Cohen was only 8 or 9 months old. He seemed way too young to be able to be purposeful in any negative behaviors. He proved me wrong though as it became very clear during mealtime that he knew what he was doing! He had started to throw his food on the floor, which is a phase I think most babies go through. Each time he did we would say, “Cohen,… Read More

Fresh Zucchini Ribbon Salad – Meatless Mondays by Rachel Deol

Written by: kpuryear

A few summers back I created this recipe after receiving some beautiful zucchini in a CSA produce share. Since then, it’s been my go-to whenever I want a light side dish that isn’t a green salad, or I am able to find some really fresh & lovely zucchinni. Let me promise you that you should try this recipe at least once, as the very fresh flavors will surprise even those typically indifferent to vegetables. As with any recipe that includes… Read More

Got Milk? A Personal Breastfeeding Journey by Kelli Smith

Written by: kpuryear

Before having Cohen I read books about pregnancy, childbirth, infant care and so on, but the most valuable information I gained was from reading about breastfeeding. I hoped to breastfeed for a year or so, but I knew going into it that that was easier said than done. Many women are unable to breastfeed because of medical issues or low supply. Even for those who are physically able to breastfeed, it can prove difficult, sometimes uncomfortable, and often exhausting.  For… Read More

Vegan Currant Lemon Scones – Meatless Mondays by Rachel Deol

Written by: kpuryear

I really adore scones, but I find it difficult to get the texture exactly right. I’m sure there are many schools of thought on this topic but, in my mind, the perfect scone should be much like a fluffy biscuit. Not too dry, not too dense or too light, but rather a flaky and buttery piece of heaven. You can, of course, put whatever dried fruit and/or nuts your heart desires in these beauties, but I prefer the sweet simplicity… Read More

The Gift of Music by Steve Dandrea

Written by: kpuryear

With Mothers day just behind us, I would like to use this blog entry to thank my mom (and Dad too, in the interest of fairness) for giving me a gift that I carry with me to this very day, and that is the gift of music. Most children are surrounded by music either in the form of nursery rhymes, the radio played in the car, television advertisements or blaring out of a sibling’s room. Whatever the locus, music is… Read More

Exercise After Baby by Kelli Smith

Written by: kpuryear

Before beginning any exercise program postpartum, please consult your doctor. As someone who worked out up until the day I went into labor, I was very anxious to get back at it after having my son. I wasn’t super paranoid about losing the baby weight, but more antsy about getting my body moving again. After a difficult labor and delivery I wasn’t so sure how soon I would be allowed to start running again, although my doctor did joke the… Read More
