The Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) hosts at least four Prevent Child Abuse Network (PCAN) trainings a year to keep the community updated on latest trends and best practices. The next one will occur on February 16, 2018 at the Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Reylena Lopez, MSW will present “Trauma Informed Care Part 2: Emotional Regulation and Mindfulness Exercises for All Ages.”
During the presentation she will demonstrate how trauma impacts a child’s ability to regulate his or her emotions. According to Lopez’ research and work in the field, she says, “Many children struggle with regulating their emotions, and there is a need to inform staff, children, and mentors of these behavioral challenges.” For example, she explains that children may lack basic coping mechanisms and become more particular or anxious when they are experiencing or have experienced some form of trauma. Throughout her presentation, Lopez will provide mindfulness and grounding exercises for staff to complete together with the children they help.
